Darjeeling Diaries : Darjeeling is a town in West Bengal situated at an average elevation of around 2000 meters. This town came into prominence around mid 19th century when the colonial British administration set up a sanatorium and a military depot. With time and after Independence of India, the place has changed a lot. Although it’s still known for the wide variety of superb tea gardens, for the people from plain in West Bengal it’s more than just a place or hill station. To many, Darjeeling is an experience; a memory worth remembering. I visited Darjeeling after quite a few years; around 4-5 years to be exact. The memories I had from my last trip are almost lost in oblivion. In last few months I managed to visit Darjeeling multiple times via both planned and unplanned trips. The result – some great experiences, some unforgettable moments and lot and lots of fun. I would agree at the end of all these tours; Darjeeling will remain as a feeling or as an experience instead of the just being a place. These are the photos, to keep my memories alive.

Terribly Happy : The village of Deriapur in West Bengal is not very much known to outsiders. Although Indians are familiar with metal casting for more than five thousands years and Dokra is one of the ancient metal casting process still existing within Santhals, there are less people to take notice of it. The people of Deriapur have a unique history. They belonged to Malhar tribe which was nomadic in nature. Finally they settled in two places in West Bengal, India. One of those two places is Deriapur where around 50 families are putting up. Their art of creating metal structures is beautiful but silent. It does not ring bell in Governments officials who are busy in much more important matters and they closed their office which used to lend out money to the artisans sometime back. Media has many other important things to cover as well so the people of Deriapur are slowly getting the same idea and moving on. Some of their children go to school and drop out because of money and elders work mostly in fields or they prefer to drink when they have some money. Art can come later. Around 20 years back one of these people got an award from the President for his talent and got 1 Lakh Indian rupees (which was a good amount that time). The same person now goes to field for living. They don't have much complains though and they are slowly getting into a state which we call - terribly happy!

City : To me a city is always expanding...as if its growing on you.....everyday....there is a new building around the corner....you are constrained in it....as if you are squeezed in it...I feel scared of it....as if there is no escape....everyday travelling on the same road to sit in the same space may be in one of those buildings and watching the empty space go away.....I find myself in jungle of men and buildings.....of concrete.....and it so overwhelming I loose myself in it....I feel the fear of getting lost.....that's is what city is to me.

The Final Months : On 9th of May,2011 my wife gave birth to our first child. In these nine eventful months I wanted to portray her feelings, emotions through pictures. I ended up deciding to look at the last few months of her pregnancy. Being a father it's sometimes tough to understand or feel her pain/issues. It's a difficult situation to be in, knowing only thing you could do is "try to feel" and help. As she recovers from her pain now this is my try to show the last few months, little moments which we can cherish forever.

Charak : Charak puja is a traditional Bengali festival celebrated mainly in the rural areas. A festival dedicated strictly to penance, Charak puja stands unique in the scenario of Bengali festivals. The groups of men and women, who take up this 'Brata' or the time bound ritual, have to go through a month long fasting from sunrise to sunset, live strictly on fruits & perform the daily worship in order to get the blessings of the lord. On the day of the 'Charak' or the 'Gajan', as it is also called, bamboo stages are made on bamboo poles, the height ranging from 10 to 15 feet. What follows is a macabre yet fascinating. After the month long penance the devotees step up the high bamboo stage & hurl themselves forward. The festival not only reflects the blind faith but also the eagerness to accept penance on the road to achieve salvation.
